  • THE CAVE WHERE CHRIST WAS BORN: The arched form is the Grotto of the Nativity, the cave beneath the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem that pilgrims have venerated since the second century as the actual birthplace of Christ. Tradition (Justin Martyr, Origen, St. Jerome) places the Nativity not in a wooden stable but in this Bethlehem cave. This is the carving of that grotto.
